Intercepting a moving target

The target moves, but the safest route is still more important than the shortest route.

Rules for this mode

  1. The red ball periodically moves to another free cell.
  2. Walls and your tail remain active hazards.
  3. Eating the red ball adds 1 point and 1 growth section.
  4. A moved red ball does not cost a point.

Three useful decisions

  1. Intercept from open space instead of following directly.
  2. Let a bad target move again rather than entering a trap.
  3. Use long lanes that survive a sudden change of target.

Opening plan

Stay near open space and approach from a side with more than one exit. A wide lane lets you adjust when the red ball moves.

Common mistake

Copying every red ball movement and folding the body into a series of sharp corrections.

Use three runs for one change

Use the first run to learn the board. Repeat the same opening on the second run. On the third, change only the turn that caused the previous loss. This makes it easier to tell whether the problem was the route or the input.
